Giles York reassures the public

Sussex police Chief Constable has reassured worried residents and businesses that the force is still committed to carrying out its duties saying he could “fully understand” people’s concerns over law enforcement during the coronavirus crisis”.

But he reassured the public that Sussex Police are prepared for the pandemic and are working with partners to maintain police services. He said: “You should not have noticed too much difference to our service so far but it might change if the challenges continue to increase for us. We are ready to continue to provide a policing service. We are absolutely set to support our partners in delivering the services that they need to too”.

He went on to say: “You can help by contacting us online wherever possible and not asking us to attend unless it’s absolutely necessary.”

In a message to the nation yesterday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that police had been given additional powers to fine people seen to not be adhering to government orders to stay at home where possible.
