Live Facial Recognition (LFR) Deployment – 2 December (Brighton)
Surrey Police and Sussex Police have confirmed the introduction of two Home Office–funded Live Facial Recognition (LFR) vans. These units are designed to support policing operations by helping locate high-risk wanted individuals, including suspects for serious offences, sex offenders, and perpetrators of domestic abuse.
What is LFR?
Live Facial Recognition compares faces captured on a live camera feed with a pre-approved watchlist of wanted individuals. Anyone not on that watchlist is automatically and immediately deleted from the system.
Why are they using it?
Police will use LFR to:
Detect and deter criminal activity
Locate wanted individuals
Prevent harm and protect the public
Support high-risk operations
All deployments are overt, clearly signposted, and published in advance on Sussex Police channels.
