City crime stats released

New crime statistics from crimerate.co.uk for Brighton & Hove found that 25,291 crimes were reported in the city in 2022 compared with 23,307 in 2021.

A breakdown of the figures by area found that over half of the crimes reported were in just five of the city’s local neighbourhoods. North Laine and The Lanes were found to have just under a third of the total crimes reported - 7,909 offences. That figure works out at 624 crimes for every 1,000 people living in the area compared to a city average of just 103.

The top three most crime-ridden neighbourhoods in the city were North Laine and The Lanes, St James’s Street and Queen’s Park [210 crimes per 1,000 people] and Brunswick [140 crimes per 1,000 people]. Fiveways, West Blatchington and Hollingbury were found to have the lowest crime rates of anywhere in the city.

The statistics also found that violence and sexual offences were the most common crimes reported in the city as a whole, followed by anti-social behaviour and public order offences.
